Fortunately, it doesn't have to mean a break from school lunches.

Both Canby and Colton School Districts are offering free meals this summer.

In Canby, free grab-and-go meals are available from 9-11 a.m. Monday through Thursday for anyone 18 and under at the following locations and dates.

• Trost Elementary, 800 S. Redwood St., through Aug. 21

• Lee Elementary, 1859 S.E. Township Road, through Aug. 21

• Eccles Elementary, 562 N.W. Fifth Ave., through Aug. 21

Thursday's pickup will provide three days' worth of meals for each child.

In Colton, summer meals are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday through Aug. 31 for anyone 18 and under at Colton High School.

Colton, too, will provide a full week's worth of meals to each child. Because of social distancing rules, Colton School District asks that participants remain in their vehicles during pickup.

Today, about 552,900 Oregonians are food insecure, and 194,070 of those are children, according to the Oregon Food Bank. The Summer Food Service Program at schools exists, in part, to help close that nutrition gap.

It is administered by the Oregon Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs.

The meal programs are available to all families without paperwork, income verification and regardless of immigration status, according to the program's website. To receive a free meal, kids can just drop in during the designated distribution times.
