Police investigate arson at Eccles Elementary
Canby police are investigating a suspected arson fire that damaged a Canby elementary school during the weekend.
Canby Fire responded to an alarm at Eccles Elementary School at 4:54 p.m. Sunday. At first, crews suspected the fire could be bad.
"When we arrived, our fire engine crew made entry and noticed a light smoke in the main hallway and upgraded it to a commercial first alarm assignment," said Division Chief Matt Dale.
But they were quickly able to downgrade the alarm after finding the source of the small fire.
"What it appeared to be was papers or some type of combustibles like papers shoved between two entry/exit exterior doors … on the back side of the school and lit on fire," Dale said. "That allowed some of the smoke to come into the hallway."
The double doors open to a covered playground at the back of the school and are near the music room inside the school.
Fortunately, the small fire caused little damage to the school, only ruining a portion of the paint on the door.
According to Dale, it has been a couple of years since an incident of arson has taken place in Canby and even more years since it's happened at a school. The last one Dale remembers was a fire set possibly about 10 years ago in a Canby High School bathroom.
