Tro named Canby's new police chief
The Canby City Council has approved the promotion of Lt. Jorge Tro to chief of police when current chief Bret Smith retires.
The promotion of Tro will allow the Canby Police Department to begin the process of transitioning to new leadership and backfilling the lieutenant spot, as well as any other positions that come open due to this promotion.
Smith officially retired Sept. 30 but is doing a work-back contract with the city through April 21, 2021, to help smooth the transitions within the department.
Tro is a 23-year veteran of the Canby Police Department and has nearly 25 years of experience in law enforcement. He's been the department's second-in-command for 15 years and served as interim chief for 15 months during the candidate search that led to the hiring of Smith.
He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and holds the highest Department of Public Safety Standards & Training certification available.
Tro has been a longtime active member of the Canby community, having lived in the Canby area for 30 years. His wife, Karen, is a nurse who went through Canby schools.
The couple have two grown children who also went through the Canby school system and beyond.
He has served on the board of The Canby Center, on the Rotary board, various boards for local sports, school budget committees and numerous coaching positions throughout the years.
He is the son of Cuban immigrants and came to America in 1959 with his two older sisters.
