Voting open for Canby Scarecrow Contest
It's time. The scarecrows are up in Canby's downtown, and they are awaiting your vote.
This marks Hot Rod Dreamworks' third annual Scarecrow Contest.
Businesses and organizations have constructed their scarecrow creations, now situated on Second and Third Streets for viewing. All scarecrows are also pictured online at www.hotroddreamworks.com/contest.aspx.
Vote by scanning the QR code on the sign of your favorite scarecrow, by visiting that website or by calling 503-266-6511.
There will be four winners from the contest — first ($200), second ($100) and third ($50) places based on online voting as well as a Hot Rod pick ($50).
And there are plenty of scarecrows to choose from with themes ranging from "Where's Waldo" to "The Wizard of Oz" and even "Tiger King."
Shannon Allee of Hod Rod Dreamworks started the contest in 2018 as a way to encourage folks to visit Canby's downtown businesses, and even amid the pandemic, the goal remains.
"For me … [it's] bringing recognition to businesses," Allee said. "This is a hard time for any small business. … It doesn't matter what industry you're in."
For businesses that missed out on registering for the scarecrow contest, fear not — the snowman contest is close behind. Spoiler alert: it may be more open-ended this year.
"This year, I may not even do snowmen; I may do any Christmas theme — like if they want to do just a tree, or they want to do a snowman," Allee said. "I may just open it up and say, 'You have this much space. Go to town."
