The Canby Center and community partners held a family event Aug. 14 that gave out more than 400 backpacks.

Tuesday, Aug. 14, The Canby Center welcomed community members for a family event. Guests and volunteers escaped the heat and enjoyed shaved ice, raffles, and games.

Opportunities to connect with local resources included Imagination Library with the Canby Kiwanis Foundation and Pass It On Canby. Canby Fire District and Canby Police helped cook and serve luau-themed food.

And within the event, a record-breaking 402 students received brand new backpacks and the essential supplies they need to head back to school in Canby this fall.

"I'm not one to ask for help or for a handout," one Canby mom said. "But finances have been really tight."

The Canby Center's mission is simple: In God's love, we renew dignity and inspire learning for youth and families.

"The Canby Center is helping us in a real way and these backpacks will help my kids have a great first day at school," said the woman.
