Canby Herald Letters to the Editor for the issue of April 3, 2019 - transgender issues in Canby

To the editor:

I am the chair of GLSEN Oregon. I have worked with folks who are leaders of the Clackamas County PFLAG.

I've attended events at Canby High School. Recently driving through Canby, signs were up everywhere I looked saying things like don't give up hope, you are loved, we are here for you.

Can the people against the Transgender Day of Visibility proclamation be so forgetful and uncaring of the recent youth's lives that have been lost?

I live in Clackamas County and know there are those who do not understand, recognize, approve of, are hateful toward gender non-conforming individuals. I know that youth experience daily aggression and intimidation from members of the community.

Publicly standing up to acknowledge a marginalized group is just that, acknowledgement. Some want the complete erasure of transgender people, even speaking openly about violence and murder.

When these comments are made and not challenged it is tacit approval. I fear that your applicant pool for a new city manager will not have the richness and diversity that your community deserves and obviously needs.

If a community cannot voice public support for all marginalized communities, then I suspect that many applicants will choose communities where the respect is apparent and supportive.
