Opinion: Mark Shull's poor judgment faces consequences
Jo Haverkamp asks that we forgive Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull because he only posted about the Muslims he had been fighting and because he has a First Amendment right to post what he wishes.
Firstly, Mr. Shull did not just attack the "Muslims he fought." You can see many of his posts for yourself at recallmarkshull.com. Mr. Shull denigrated immigrants, people of color and all Muslims — not just those he fought. In addition, he has spoken at events with Proud Boys and events that featured hate speech toward LGBTQ folks and has a record of domestic violence.
Secondly, Mr. Shull does indeed have the right to post what he wishes. But he also needs to face the consequences of his extremely poor judgment. Voters were sold a bill of goods about who he really is, and someone who has expressed such hate toward members of our community is not fit for public office.
