A look at letters to the editor for the May 5, 2021 edition - Canby School Board candidates, odd tax levy situation

Vissers the kind of person needed on Canby School Board

I'm writing in support of Shelley Vissers for Canby School Board Director, Position 7. I have had the great pleasure of knowing Shelley for many years within the community of Canby, as well as volunteering alongside her for seven years at Carus Elementary School.

As an active school volunteer, Shelley has a great deal of respect for teachers and specialists and how hard they work for our students each day.

Shelley works with a diverse student population and cares deeply for each child no matter their background. She is a familiar face at school board meetings, district focus groups and many other community events.

The Herald Pioneer.

Through her kind and generous nature, she is approachable and has worked to empower teachers and parents to help voice the needs of their students. As a lifetime Canby resident, Shelley is deeply invested in the community and the future of our education system. It is because of this that I wholeheartedly believe that Shelley is exactly the kind of person we need on our Canby School Board.

Vissers a good choice for Canby School Board

I have known Shelley Vissers for almost 20 years. She is a devoted wife and mother of three beautiful girls and an experienced businessperson with financial and management experience.

Knowing her as I do, I believe that she will bring both operational experience and strategic thinking to the Canby School Board and, most importantly, a common sense, collaborative approach to solving issues.

For these reasons I fully support Shelley for the Canby School Board and encourage others to vote for her.

County police levy has odd twist; vote no

I have a curious observation and am hoping others saw it as well. The county police want more money as the "old levy" expires in December 2021.

Interesting that if not passed taxes do not change. Shouldn't the old levy expire and return money to homeowners? This is what happens when we as a community do not pay attention.

My vote is "no." Sell the dead fleet that sits on Redland across from the old Oregon City shops.

Smith worthy of a school board seat

To the editor:

When my wife and I first moved to Canby 25 years ago it was because of the quality of the schools. Now, that may not be as true.

With all that's going on in our society, I'm very concerned that agendas and curricula that would not be supported by parents (but may be supported by the educational establishment) will find their way into our classrooms.

We should have a school board that will act as guardrails against agenda driven curricula. I'm supporting Sherry Smith for the Canby School Board as I know that her focus will be what's in the best interest of our children and that she will be a fierce defender of parental rights in the education of their children.

Zagyva's experience is needed on school board

To the editor

We have known Mike Zagyva since our sons were in kindergarten together, 42 years ago. He has lived, worked and volunteered in our community for nearly 50 years.

There are many ways Mike has shown his exemplary leadership skills as a teacher, coach, community leader, assistant principal, Chief Warrant Officer in the military, principal and church leader. He continues to work tirelessly for all students as a member of the current school board.

Mike understands parent concerns, especially this year as covid restrictions made it so difficult for children and their parents to navigate our public education system. He is invested in the school district , not only in his career but as a father and grandfather. Mike is the most qualified person for position 4. He is willing to give his time, expertise and support to the children and parents of Canby. We've been so lucky to have Mike's knowledge, honesty, dedication and leadership on the school board so let's continue our lucky streak and vote for Mike Zagyva again.
