Distance running wunderkind Izabela Kacalek sets school record in 1,500, qualifies for state meet

ARCHIVE PHOTO: TANNER RUSS - Canby sophomore Izabela Kacalek sets new school record in the 1,500-meter race at the district meet. Newberg—Izabela Kacalek is really going for the gusto in her first track and field season. After setting the school record in the 3,000 meter race earlier in the season, Kacalek took first in the 1,500 meter race at the Three River League district meet with a personal best time of 4:41.70. In doing so, she also broke the school record previously held by Jean Marie Peterson, now Jean Marie Dupont. This time, Jean Marie's 15 year record was busted by six seconds.

"It's rewarding to see the efforts of myself and my coaches paying off," Kacalek said. "It's incomplete without the support of my teammates, though. I want all that I do in track to honor God."

"I am excited for the state meet," Kacalek added. "I want to use my opponents to push myself to the limit. It's a competition against the mind and the body."

The next closest state qualifiers were distance runners Tristan Oakes and Cole Thomas. Oakes claimed fourth place in the 1,500 meter race finals with a personal best 4:07.96 seconds. Oakes high school career ends with a place as one of Canby's top runners, holding top 20 positions in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter races among the school's all-time records. Junior Cole Thomas took fifth place in the 3,000-meter race with a personal record of 9:02.60 seconds.

Senior Katie Odell took fifth place in the discus with a personal record of 112 feet 4.5 inches. Odell also took ninth place in the shot put. Younger sister Ally Odell took fifth place in the triple jump with 34 feet 2 inches, also a personal best.
