State Championship: Doman takes fifth
Canby wrestling found a way to the podium this year in the form of junior Logan Doman. The 160-pound wrestler placed fifth out of the pack, going 4-2 in six matches.
In the opening round, Doman pinned Mountain View's Leslie Combs inside of two rounds to advance to the second round. Once there, he scored an 18-7 major decision over Westview's Brison Mortenson. In the quarterfinals, Doman won a shutout decision 7-0 over North Medford's Thomas Hamilton.
In the semifinals things hit a wall for the Canby rep. Sprague's Landon Davis won a 7-2 decision over the Cougar, and Roseburg's Darian Thacker won a 6-2 decision against Doman in the consolation semifinals. With his back up against the wall, Doman won a hard fought 10-9 decision in the fifth place matchup against North Medford's Thomas Hamilton.
Another busy Canby representative was senior Stephen Rue. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Rue lost a technical fall 20-5 against Westview's Kianush Behbehani-Escobar in the second round.
In the consolation bracket, Rue rebounded in a big way. The Canby 195-pounder pinned Grant's Diego Rolon in the second round at 3:28, and followed it up with a 3-1 decision over Lakeridge's Nolan Russell. In the fourth round, Rue won a 14-7 decision over David Douglas's Josiah Green. In the fifth, and ultimately final, consolation round, Rue was pinned by Century's Loudyn Reese in the waning seconds of the first round.
Heavyweight Kyler Boyd picked up a pair of wins in between tough losses. In the opening round, Boyd lost a close 9-6 decision to Westview's Angel Omar Blas. After receiving a bye in the opening consolation round, Boyd pinned Centennial's Randall Sheck 40 seconds into the second round. In the second consolation round, Boyd pinned Newberg's Connor O'Bryan late into the match. In his last match of the weekend, he fell prey to Century's Broderick Reese, getting pinned in 45 seconds.
Canby 132-pounder K'den McMullin dropped a pair of matches to Newberg's Price Pothier and Tigard's Emilio Jimenez. 160-pounder Kaden Boyd suffered a similar fate, suffering a late pinfall to Newberg's Rowan Gallardo, and an 8-2 decision to Mountain View's Leslie Combs.
138-pounder Josh Rowden had to forfeit both of his matchups with Aloha's Jaime Lemus and Sprague's Luke Merzenich.
