Kacalek closes in on yet another school record; Ard shines in javelin, shot put

PMG FILE PHOTO: TANNER RUSS - Canby's Avery Kavanaugh looked strong at the 200 meters at the last league meet of the season. Canby's track and field teams competed in a pair of meets this past week. On Tuesday, April 30 Canby traveled with Tualatin to compete at Tigard High School, ultimately coming up short against both opponents on points (the girls lost to Tualatin 88-57, and Tigard 79-54, while the boys lost to Tualatin 119-26, and Tigard 96-47).

Despite the team losses, there were several marks that the Cougars should take pride in.

Junior Izabela Kacalek took first place in the 400-meter race, establishing a personal best 59.80 seconds in just her second time racing the event. That time also put her on the school's all-time list at No. 4 in the event. Kacalek was also a part of the 4x400-meter relay team (with junior Jennifer Torres, junior Kahleia Rose, and freshman Kathryn Frentress) that took first place.

Torres took first place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.07, little more than a second off of her personal best. Torres also took third in the 400 meters with 1:02.85, behind Kacalek and teammate Avery Kavanaugh.

Junior Ally Odell took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.17 seconds. Odell also took first place in the javelin with a throw of 113'1".

On the boys side of things senior Bryce Ard snagged the lone first place finish for the team, doing so in his premier event, the javelin. Ard's first place fling was 159'10".

Fellow senior Cole Thomas took second place in the 800 meters with a 2:08.83 mark, and junior Matthew Powell took second place in the 400-meter race with a personal best 53.06 seconds.
