Kacalek, Ard, and Knutson advance past strong district competition to state championships

PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - Izabela Kacalek qualified for the state track and field meet once again.
A trio of Canby track and field athletes will be making the trip to Mt. Hood Community College this upcoming Friday and Saturday to compete in the 6A state championships.

Senior javelin ace Bryce Ard, junior 800 runner Izabela Kacalek, and wild card in the high jump Riley Knutson were the only three of the team to qualify for the state meet.

PMG PHOTO: TANNER RUSS - Bryce Ard made the cut for javelin, but also made competed in the shot put. Ard qualified with a throw of 182'6" to take the spot, edging Oregon City's Logan Peyton by two feet and seven inches. Ard's personal best is 183'9", a mark he set at the Elden Kellar Invitational on April 26. Ard's personal best and season best sits him at fourth place in the 6A classification, firmly entrench in the middle of the top 10. While his throws have been impressive all season, the top spot will most likely elude the Cougar. Central Catholic junior Joseph Nizich set a personal best and standard to beat with a throw of 213'6" he set at the Mt. Hood Championships.

Kacalek returns to the state championships for the second time. This year Kacalek will participate in the 800-meter race, an event she qualified in with a second place finish at districts and a time of 2:18.22. Kacalek's time has her at 16th in the state at 6A, and within one second of the next four runners. The 800 is also one of Kacalek's top events, as she sits in second place all time on the school's record books.

Knutson's leap of 6'1" was enough to put him over the top, and send him to the state championships for the first time in his track and field career. The sophomore's personal best jump put him in six place of the school's record book. The school record of 6'2" is shared by four different people.
