Cougars shut out Sandy in season opener
Canby's girls soccer team opened the 2019 season last Monday with a 2-0 win at Sandy.
"It was really fun to watch the girls out there," Canby coach Maria VanAcker said. "The first 15 minutes or so, we definitely had some jitters, which is expected. We were trying to hide the excitement from playing for the first time. The girls worked through those jitters together and started to sort things out."
About midway through the first half, sophomore Joey Baguio scored the Cougars first goal on a header off a corner kick.
"It sent a lightning bolt through the whole team, which was super cool," VanAcker said. "Set pieces are something that we've been working on, especially winning balls in the air in the box, so it was really great to see Joey capitalize on that opportunity."
Baguio scored again in the second half on a "rocket" to the far post from about 25 yards out.
"From there we just made sure we played really great defense and not give up anything in the second half," VanAcker said. "Sandy had some opportunities. They did not back down. They kept coming at us and kept attacking from their midfield. Our midfield, in defense, did a really great job of staying strong, and defending them and respecting their level of play. They were a great team. Halle Adair had a couple of big saves coming down the stretch in the second half."
