In this week's Canby Vibe Sport Talk podcast, Canby Herald sports editor Derek Wiley, along with the rest of the Herald staff – Editor John Baker, Assistant Editor Kristen Wohlers, and Reporter Carol Rosen – talked about the past week in sports, as well as what is coming in the near future.
A Canby High soccer player has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and the community rallying around her impending fight with a special night. Wiley discussed several special events meant to support junior Ellie Shorter and her battle. The home soccer match on Oct. 17 will be dedicated to her and special T-shirts have been created to support Ellie. Cost is $10 and can be purchased through Canby High School.
In addition to supporting Ellie, Wiley provided updates on the Canby High volleyball team, which took league leader West Linn to five sets before falling earlier in the week, as well as a look at the Canby High football team that struggled against Newberg the week before.
The staff discussed the importance of people focusing on the program's improvement as much or more than simple wins and losses. The Cougars are entering a tough stretch of games and the staff discussed how important it is to support coach Jimmy Joyce as the rebuilding process continues.
