PMG PHOTO: DEREK WILEY - Ruby Kayser, Natalie Doman and Daley McClellan jump to block a Lake Oswego hit at the net Thursday night.

Canby needed five sets to win at Lake Oswego to open Three Rivers League action.

Thursday night back at home, the Cougars showed how far they have come in the last month, sweeping the Lakers 3-0 to improve to 6-2 in league play.

"I think we just had a lot of confidence and played together coming out," said Canby senior Ruby Kayser, who had 31 assists, three aces and three kills against Lake Oswego. "We definitely communicated better than them and had better energy throughout the whole game. I don't think that we ever had any doubts that we were going to win, which is how it should be every game."

The Cougars biggest confidence booster came the week before in a 3-2 loss to West Linn on Sept. 26.

"I think that West Linn game gave us a lot of energy going into the rest of the season," Kayser said. In my four years, we've never played that good against them. Now we believe we can win the league or get second in the league."

Against Lake Oswego, Canby fell behind in the first set before fighting back to win 25-19.

Tied 19-19 in the second set, the Cougars again finished strong to win 25-21.

A D V E R T I S I N G | Continue reading below
<!--// var m3_u = (location.protocol=='https:'?'https://reach.adspmg.com/ajs.php':'http://reach.adspmg.com/ajs.php'); var m3_r = Math.floor(Math.random()*99999999999); if (!document.MAX_used) document.MAX_used = ','; document.write ("<scr"+"ipt type='text/javascript' src='"+m3_u); document.write ("?zoneid=739&block=1"); document.write ('&cb=' + m3_r); if (document.MAX_used != ',') document.write ("&exclude=" + document.MAX_used); document.write (document.charset ? "I was really proud of our defenders and our passers. They did a really good job tonight. We were able to run the middles and run some different plays. We have learned to trust each other better, especially when the passing and serving is on, it helps us relax a lot more because that's the strongest part of our game."

Daley McClellan had 17 kills and four digs in the victory.
