Canby dance team wins Modern, Large Contemporary titles
Canby's dance team continues to dominate the Modern division.
Competing in the Dance and Drill Coaches Association's Category Championships, Canby won its eighth straight Modern state title on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Lakeridge High School.
This year's routine, titled "Unhinged" and Choreographed by James Healey, featured 31 dancers and a door that rolled around on wheels.
"The dancers gave their best performance of the season and earned that coveted first place," Canby coach Jennifer Chaffee said. "When it comes to modern dance, we are doing some amazing things here in Canby."
The Cougars also won the Large Contemporary division, performing a routine choreographed by Healey to Mumford and Sons "The Cave."
"The 20 dancers nailed their turns, danced in unison and projected some great emotions," Chaffee said.
Canby finished second in Kick, a division it had not competed in for five years.
"Coaches were very proud of them for giving a new style a try and doing so well with it," said Chaffee, who choreographed the routine with assistant coach and former Canby dancer Jenna Jernstrom. "All in all it was a wonderful fall season for the Cougar dancers.
Canby will now shift its focus to attempting to win its sixth straight OSAA show title.
"This team is growing and improving every week and finding their connections as teammates," Chaffee said. "The coaches are very proud of how they represented themselves, our school and our community at all of our competitions. They encourage each other, cheer each other on, and push each other to be their best. We couldn't ask for more than that. We are so thankful for our amazing parent group who helps make all this possible with the ways they support us behind the scenes."
