Cougars grab golf title
They did it. The Canby Cougar girls golf team emerged from the district tournament with the conference title.
The Cougars got off to a slow start, something coach Terry Bailey would credit to nerves, but righted the ship and got a three-stroke win over West Linn, securing the conference title.
"I can't say enough about these seniors," Bailey said. "Allison (Bassett), Hannah (Hughes), and McKenna (Moore) brought much-improved games into this season. It's easy to practice and think you got it, but another thing to tee it up in this tough Three Rivers conference and come out a winner. West Linn was nipping at our heels every match, it seemed like."
Bassett led the way for the Cougars, besting her previous best at Stone Creek Golf Club by one stroke, carding an 82 Monday.
"Had a few more putts dropped, she could have been even lower," Bailey said. "She had the fourth best score overall."
Hughes did the same, carding an 88 on the day, which backed up a nice round from Tyler Olson, who shot an 85 on the day.
"Those are three great scores and McKenna rounded out our team with a 112," Bailey said. "Winning the conference is quite the achievement and they were super happy. We are looking forward to Monday at the OGA course in Woodburn. It will be a great test going up against other conferences."
