Canby swimmers prevailin pair of dual meets
Though swimming a bit short-handed, the Canby High swim team won both ends of a dual meet with Lakeridge on June 1.
Swimming with just eight girls and seven boys, the Cougar girls won 92-52, while the boys chalked up a 77-57 win. And while winning is nice on a hot day, coach Eric Laitinen has other goals.
"Again, this season is about getting swimmers the opportunity to participate and enjoy racing, although it's nice to win sometimes, too," Laitinen said.
The Canby girls won the 200 medley and 200 free relays with a team of Kali Mull, Avery Keinonen, Kennedy Hester and Kylie Hester. They also finished third in both relays with Kathryn Taggart, Katie Ball, Megan Slater and Elizabeth Johnson.
Kali Mull finished first in the 200 free and 500 free in times of 2:02.99 and 5:38.40. Kathryn Taggart was second in the 200 free with a time of 2:24.03. Avery Keinonen finished first in the 200 IM in 2:26.92 and won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:18.65. Elizabeth Johnson was third in the 200 IM and second in the 500 free. Kylie Hester was first in the 50 and 100 free in 25.63 and 58.40. Kennedy Hester was third in the 50 free and second in the 100 free. Katie Ball finished first in the 100 fly with a 1:17.74 and was third in the 100 back. Megan Slater finished second in the 100 fly and third in the 100 breaststroke.
On the boys side, the medley relay of Hunter DeRisio, Kai Laitinen, Conner DeRisio and Issac Beck won in a time of 1:49.18. The 200 free relay of Jamison Chard, Jack Hayhurst, Matthew Solem and Conner DeRisio also finished first in 1:41.01.
Individually, Issac Beck was first in the 200 free and 500 free with times of 1:59.04 and 5:10.14. Conner DeRisio finished second in the 200 free and first in the 100 fly with a 58.76. Jack Hayhurst finished first in the 200 IM in a time of 2:16.34 and first in the 100 back in 59.05. Kai Laitinen finished second in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. Jamison Chard was third in the 50 free and the 100 free. Hunter DeRisio finished first in the 100 free with at time of 52.03 and was second in the 100 backstroke.
Laitinen named Jack Hayhurst and Katie Ball his swimmers of the meet.

Canby boys 73, Tualatin 58
Canby Cougars took both ends of a swim dual against Tualatin on June 3.
The Canby girls wonn 71 to 69 and the Canby Boys won 73-58.
Both the girls and boys teams secured the wins by winning the last relay of the meet, each with season best times.

The Canby boys team of Jack Hayhurst, Kai Laitinen, Matthew Solem and Jamison Chard, won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:54.59. The 200 free relay of Jack Hayhurst, Issac Beck, Conner DeRisio and Hunter DeRisio got the win in 1:34.44.
Conner DeRisio finished first in the 50 free with a time of 24.43 and was second in the 100 fly with a best time of 57.12. Hunter DeRisio finished first in the 100 free in 52.04 and was second in the 100 back. Jack Hayhurst nabbed a first in the 100 back in 1:00.43 and was second in the 50 free. Issac Beck was first in the 500 free in 5:12.67 and second in the 100 IM. Kai Laitinen was second in the 100 breast in a best time of 1:11.85 and third in the 500 free. Jamison Chard finished third in the 100 IM.
On the girl's side, the 200 medley relay team of Kali Mull, Avery Keinonen, Kylie Hester and Kennedy Hester finished first in a time of 2:03.40. Finishing third in the same relay was Ali Parsons, Megan Slater, Katie Ball and Elizabeth Johnson. In the 200 free relay, Kali, Avery, Kennedy and Kylie finished first with a season best 1:45.89. Kali Mull led the girls team with a first place in the 100 free in 55.96 and first in the 100 back in 1:04.74. Avery Keinonen finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.00 and got second in the 100 fly.
Kylie Hester finished first in the 50 free with a 25.82 and was second in the 100 free. Kennedy Hester was second in the 100 back and third in the 50 free. Katie ball finished third in the 500 free while Megan Slater finished second in the 100 breaststroke in a best time of 1:23.70.
Swimmers of the meet were Conner DeRisio and Elizabeth Johnson.
Canby next gets in the pool on Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m. as St. Mary's pays a visit.
