Tyler Konold runs wild again, the defense holds a potent offense in check, and Canby goes to 5-0 in league

A quick 27-0 lead paved the way for Canby's fifth straight league win, a 33-21 road victory at Scappoose Oct. 15.

The offense rolled early and the defense held Scappoose, one of the highest scoring teams in Class 5A, under control for most of the game.

"I'm really happy with how our kids battled throughout the night," Canby coach Jimmy Joyce said. "The defense deserves a ton of credit. Scappoose is (one of) the highest scoring team in the state and to hold them to 21 points is impressive.

"Jumping out to a 27-0 lead was great and to hold on when the momentum swung in the third showed the maturity of our team," Joyce said.

The defense is being led by a trio of linebackers in Braden Snoderly, Davis Hagen, and Joe Brauckmiller, who set the tone. Matt Soles is playing well at safety and Casey and Clayton Langdale, who finally returned to the lineup after a week 1 injury, have been stellar on the defensive line this season.

Offensively, the Cougars continue to click as Tyler Konold ran wild again, racking up more than 225 yards rushing and three touchdown runs. Fellow running back Bryce Oliver added a touchdown run, as did quarterback Mikey Gibson.

"We have a lot to still clean up, but this was a great win over a great opponent," Joyce said.

The win pushed Canby's Special District 2 record to 5-0 and set them on a collision course with Wilsonville (5-0) in the season finale. The two teams are ranked fourth and first, respectively, in the OSAA rankings and it would seem to come down to an Oct. 29 showdown for the league title.

But before that occurs, both teams will look to one more game. Canby (6-1 overall) will travel to 1-4 Forest Grove on Oct. 22.
