Cougar grapplers claim tourney title
Canby's wrestling team flexed its muscle a bit in the 16-team Rick Herrin Holiday Classic at McKay High School on Dec. 11, winning the team title while placing wrestlers in all but two weight classes.
For head coach Jeremy Ensrud, it was a good early-season performance from his squad.
"We ended up with two individual champions in Craig Williams (120 pounds) and Ty Ewers (126) and had two second-place finishers in Ethan Ensrud (160 pounds) and Cash Montgomery (182 pounds)," Ensrud said. "The team was very dominant."
Tournament results by weight class:
106 - Matthew Young - 6th
113 - Brady Froyd - 5th
120 - Craig Williams - 1st
126 - Ty Ewers - 1st
132 - Landon Sprague - 3rd
138 - Thomas Marquez - 3rd
145 - Zach Netter - 5th
160 - Ethan Ensrud - 2nd
160 - Jame Keinonen - 6th (second entry at 160)
170 - Jackson Doman - 3rd
182 - Cash Montgomery - 2nd
220 - Matthew Hagen - 4th
Overall, Canby scored 219 points to win going away, outdistancing South Salem (174.5), South Albany (163) and the rest of the field for the team title.
In a nice look at the Cougar's depth, eight JV wrestlers took home titles as well. They were: Nico Yazzlino, Eric Jimenez, Jesse Zimmer, Tyler Hedberg, Isaiah Parsons, Wyatt Samarin, Collin Vian, and Saxon Montes.
