Cougars wrestle way to title
The Canby High wrestling team got back into action Jan. 8 at the McMinnville Tournament, snagging plenty of placings in the 16-team event, including the team title.
Canby racked up 193 points to claim victory, outdistancing Tillamook (178) for the win.
In all, the Cougars got five wrestlers into championship matches, though they came away with only one individual title – Ty Ewers at 126 pounds.
Ewers was on fire in this one, recording three straight pins on his way to the championship match, where he clinched the win via a 12-5 decision.
Second place finishes went to Thomas Marquez at 138 pounds, who lost in the finals by an 11-3 score; Ethan Ensrud, who lost by fall in the finals; Jackson Doman, who just came up short in a 5-4 decision; and Cash Montgomery at 182 pounds.
The Cougars got third place finishes from Landon Sprague at 132 pounds and Zach Netter at 145, a fourth from Craig Williams at 120 pounds and fifth place finishes from Mathew Young (106), Brady Froyd (113) and Mathew Hagen (220).In all, the Cougars took 12 wrestlers to the tournament and 11 placed.."The team is wrestling very well," coach Jeremy Ensrud said. "We still have some areas we can improve, but overall we have a very competitive team."
The Cougars jump back into league dual meet action Jan. 8 with a visit to Lake Oswego, then compete in the Bob Beisell Invitational in Forest Grove on Jan. 15.
