The Cougar girls held off St. Mary's and Lakeridge, while the boys got third; 12 swimmers qualify for state

It was quite a finish to the Three Rivers League season for the Canby swim team. The Cougars claimed the girls team title, the boys got third, and 12 swimmers will represent Canby at the state meet next weekend.

Here's a look at how the Canby swimmers fared at the district meet.

"Canby swimmers swam very well a the district meet," coach Eric Laitinen said. "The seniors really stepped up, but the whole team did fantastic. Remember, they didn't have a district meet last year, so for half the team it was a new experience and they held up well. "The state meet will also be new for half of the swimmers going. We just want them to swim faster and move up in the rankings, and we will see where that puts us this year," Laitinen added.

The Canby girls 200 medley relay of Allison Yancey, Amanda Yancey, Avery Keinonen and Kali Mull finished second in a time of 1:51.67, which earned them an automatic state meet berth. In the boys 200 medley relay, Hunter DeRisio, Kai Laitinen, Connor DeRisio and Jack Hayhurst swam to a third place finish in a season's best of 1:43.70.

In the 200 free, all four girls finished in the top 16 with Kali Mull in second with an automatic state qualifying time, Kathryn Taggart in eighth, Ally Parsons in 11th and Amy Smith in 15th. The boys 200 free had Isaac Beck in fifth and Alyk House in 10th.
