The Cougars claim one state title, a bushel-full of regional competition berths during state meet in Redmond.

You'd have to say that the Canby High School equestrian team did plenty of good work at the state meet in Redmond over the weekend.

The Cougars snagged one state championship in a team event and qualified a slew of its athletes for the Pacific Northwest Invitational Championship June 17-19 in Moses Lake, Washington. The regional event brings together the best from Oregon and Washington.

Canby's lone state title came from its Freestyle 4s Drill team. The squad of Hailey Magenheimer, Madi Bigej, Sadie Schweitzer and Madison Wheeler defeated 13 other teams for the crown.

But they weren't alone in stellar performances.

"I am so proud of this team and the way they support each other," coach Kristen Schweitzer said. "The Freestyle 4s Drill team is composed of four athletes who have never done drill before, three freshmen and a sophomore. These four athletes have worked so hard this season to learn a new event and competed at the highest level, winning the state championship. I can't wait to cheer them on at the regional competition in June."
