Canby baseball earns first playoff win since 2005
Canby took the lead in the fifth inning and never looked back.
Canby senior Mikey Gibson stole home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead they would ride out to their first playoff win since 2005. The last time Canby won was a 7-0 win over South Eugene when the school was still classified in 4A.
Gibson reached first base on a ground ball error from Bend's shortstop and stole second and third to put himself in scoring position. The other run came courtesy of senior Joe Brauckmiller, who was driven in by senior Bryce Oliver on a double to leftfield.
From the mound, Brauckmiller earned the win with just a single run given up. Including the win over Bend, Canby's defense and pitching have kept its opponents to one run or fewer on nine separate occasions. Canby's record when that happens is 9-0.
Canby (16-12) will face off against a streaking South Medford (23-3) on Wednesday, May 25. The Panthers have won their last 14 games in a row and finished the regular season as Southwest Conference champions.
