To the editor:

While I don’t have a problem with people being upset about Confederate flags flying in Canby, I do think the emotional reaction to it is a bit overblown.

There is a veritable buffet of things that could offend us that come across our lives everyday and every day you have to choose how you’ll respond to those. Most of the time, we simply ignore them and move on with life. We can’t eliminate everything that’s a potential offense. It’s just an impossible task.

In the end, the Confederate flag simply isn’t worth so much rancor and emotionalism.

The truth is, if you’re offended by it, that’s fine. But it’s just a flag and you should be far more worried about the people who fly it. It’s just cloth. People are what we should be worried about in this day and age, not a symbol of a long-ago cause that was doomed from the start.

So, we’ve all had our say. People who were offended have had their chance to be righteously indignant. That’s great. That’s the American way. But it’s time to move on and focus on the many great things about this area.

Saying that the flying of a Confedrate flage in Canby will induce long-term damage is ridiculous. It was poor taste and it offended some folks. The loophole that allowed it will be closed and the sun continues to come up. Let’s move on to more important things, shall we?
