Event scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12 will feature self-guided tours, food and entertainment, and a 5K fun run

LON AUSTIN - St. Charles Hospital Prineville will open on Sept. 21, and the public is invited to check out the new facility during a special event on Sept. 12.

The new St. Charles Prineville Hospital is schedule to open Monday, Sept. 21, but residents can get an early tour of the facility during a “Sneak Peek” event on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The “Sneak Peek” celebration of St. Charles Prineville runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Scheduled events include self-guided tours of the facility, food and live music entertainment, a 5K family fun run, plus other events. The 5-K runs kicks off the festivities. It begins and ends at the new hospital, located at 384 S.E. Combs Flat Road. The race begins at 10 a.m. (For details on the run, see page B9).

The $30 million, 62,000 square-feet health care campus includes a primary care and specialty physician clinic along with hospital services including inpatient beds, an emergency department, surgery suites, a laboratory, imaging services and much more. The hospital, which was conceptualized two years ago, is now complete.

“This is such an exciting time,” said Jeanie Gentry, CEO of St. Charles Prineville. “We’re just weeks away from opening a truly innovative facility that is designed to grow with the community for many years to come.”

Research conducted by St. Charles, Stroudwater Associates and The Neenan Company led to the design that, according to St. Charles officials, is “intended to improve access to care for patients while enhancing their care experience and providing better value for their health care dollars.”

Most nonclinical departments, such as administration, clinical education and human resources, will begin moving into their new space on Tuesday, Sept. 8, with clinical departments to follow starting Thursday, Sept. 17.

Sunday, Sept. 20, and early in the morning of Monday, Sept. 21, will be very busy. On the 21st, at 4 a.m., Pioneer Memorial Hospital will officially close at the same time St. Charles Prineville opens. The hand-off will be complete once all inpatients have been transferred from one facility to the other.

Also on the 21st, St. Charles Family Care — which will also be located at the hospital campus — will open with new expanded hours. The clinic will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pioneer Memorial Hospital opened in 1950, following a public fundraising campaign to improve the community’s medical capabilities. St. Charles began lease operation of the local hospital in 2008.

St. Charles Health System, Inc., headquartered in Bend, owns and operates St. Charles Bend, Madras and Redmond, and will own the new facility in Prineville. It also owns family care clinics in Bend, Madras, Prineville, Redmond and Sisters. St. Charles is a private, not-for-profit Oregon corporation and is the largest employer in Central Oregon with more than 3,400 caregivers. In addition, there are more than 350 active medical staff members and nearly 200 visiting medical staff members who partner with the health system to provide a wide range of care and service to our communities.
