Powell Butte man killed in car crash near Bend
A Powell Butte man was killed in a car crash east of Bend Monday evening.
According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office officials, the crash happened on Powell Butte Highway near McGrath Road just before 8 p.m.
Authorities said that 25-year-old Powell Butte resident Samantha Toews was driving her white 2006 Hyundai Tucson westbound on Powell Butte Highway with two passengers – 36-year-old Powell Butte resident Jason House and a 9-year-old Powell Butte girl whose name was not disclosed. As the vehicle approached the right hand curve in the road before the intersection of McGrath Road, Toews failed to negotiate the curve. The Tucson crossed through the oncoming lane and then left the roadway, rolling multiple times. Toews was restrained in the driver's seat and sustained significant injuries. House was sitting unrestrained in the front passenger's seat and was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. The young girl was sitting restrained in the back seat behind the driver and sustained minor injuries. Bend Fire Department arrived and quickly prepared and transported all three vehicle occupants to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. Upon arriving at the hospital, House was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Speed and failing to negotiate the curve are believed to be the cause of this crash. Intoxicants are also being investigated as a contributing factor. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Bend Fire Department and the Deschutes County Road Department. Traffic in the area was affected for approximately three hours while the crash scene was investigated. This investigation is ongoing.
