Facebook announces new Prineville data center expansion
Facebook announced Thursday that the company will again expand its Prineville data center.
"We are happy to share that we will be expanding our Prineville Data Center by an additional 450,000 square feet," the company said in an announcement posted to the data center's Facebook page. "That means that, once completed, this nine-building data center will represent an investment of more than $2 billion and more than 13 years of building in Prineville."
The announcement went on to note that construction of the new building began this week, and stressed that the tech company has worked closely with its general contractor to "implement the proper measures due to COVID-19 to ensure all crews are safe."
Expansion announcements are not new for the Prineville data center. In September 2018, new construction was announced that increased the total facility footprint to more than 3.2 million square feet and represented an additional investment of $750 million. That expansion was scheduled to come online midway through 2020. Prior to the 2018 expansion announcement, Facebook reported in December 2017 that it would add two buildings to the site.
