Falling tree kills man in the Ochocos
A Silver Lake man on a hunting trip on Ochoco National Forest was killed late Monday night Sept. 7 by a falling tree.
According to Crook County authorities, Jackie Milton-Bryce Pierson, age 76, was hunting with long-time family friends off U.S. Forest Service Road 22 near Scotts Camp. The hunting party had settled in for the evening, but members of the party were awakened around 10 p.m. by a tree crashing down in the middle of their camp.
The tree had broken off near the stump from the windstorm blowing through the region and came crashing down on Pierson's camp trailer, crushing and killing him.
Members of the party dug through the debris and located him, but he was already deceased. Due to no cell phone service in the area, members had to drive for phone coverage and called 911 just before 11:15 p.m.
Crook County deputies and Crook County Fire and Rescue determined that Pierson had died instantly, and authorities ruled his death a tragic accident.
