Prineville's newest restaurant will open this week, and offers hamburgers with all the fixings all hours of the day or night

RAMONA MCCALLISTER - Sammy's Burgers & Shakes will open for business on Dec. 30. Pictured from left are three of the cooks at the new restaurant: Jordan Adams, Jaccob Nordquist and Shawn Baggenstos.

If the thought of a juicy burger with a shake makes your mouth water, the idea of having that order any time of day or night will make you even happier.

That will soon be a reality as Prineville welcomes Sammy's Burgers & Shakes, which will open later this week. The drive-thru restaurant will be open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Located at 755 N. Main St., the new burger venue is owned and operated by Sammy Hanson-Fleming and is scheduled for the grand opening on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Hanson-Fleming previously owned and operated a restaurant in Vale with his father. He is hopeful this will be his second successful restaurant venture, in a community where he has a number of friends and family.

"I have been coming back and forth pretty regularly for the past eight years or so," Hanson-Fleming commented.

He currently has a print shop in Portland, which has been successful in spite of COVID. Hanson-Fleming began looking for property to build a burger business to invest the money he had gained in Portland. He looked at venues in several parts of Oregon, including Prineville. Some of the locations he considered were victims of the fires in September.

"I was out here during the fires, and I was talking to some friends of mine, and they already knew about my idea for a burger joint because I already own a food truck as well. I started looking for places and tracking foot traffic to see what kind of business I could get compared to everyone else," Hanson-Fleming noted.

During the grand opening on Wednesday, Dec. 30, Sammy's Burgers & Shakes will be giving away T-shirts, stickers and free ice cream for local kids.

"Fifteen percent of my gross for the grand opening will be donated to the Crook County Middle School, because I truly believe that where kids choose their path is in the middle school," he commented of his donations for the grand opening.

He currently has 12 employees, including cashiers, cooks, and on-call employees.

"Everyone is all local here."

When looking at the interior of the new venue for Sammy's Burgers & Shakes, the amount of square footage is surprising given the building looks smaller from Main Street.

"Everybody says that—it looks tiny," Hanson-Fleming noted of the building.

He added that with COVID restrictions, the building works well for take-out, including a 24-hour walk-up window in addition to the 24-hour drive-up window. The new burger restaurant does not have any indoor dining and is strictly a take-out restaurant—both currently and post-COVID.

The new burger restaurant offers 12 different varieties of burgers, including small and large combinations with sides like pretzels bites, pickle chips, fries and onion rings. They offer corn dogs for kids, as well as apple fries and fried pop tarts with ice cream or drizzle—and of course shakes.

"In a month or so, after opening, we will start doing daily specials."

For the breakfast menu, they are offering biscuits and gravy, French toast sticks and hash browns, as well as French toast sandwiches and biscuit sandwiches.
