Caballero started with Virginia Garcia in 2016 first as a corporate partnerships officer and then as the development officer overseeing fundraising to support the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center — which serves low-income people in Washington and Yamhill counties.

Under Caballero's leadership, the foundation said in a statement, individual contributions have grown from around $600,000 per year in 2018 to $900,000 in 2021, while corporate contributions have grown from around $160,000 per year in 2016 to $500,000 now.

Caballero was born and raised in Honduras before moving to the United States at age 15. Prior to joining Virginia Garcia, the Portland State University graduate worked in corporate relations at the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette. "The past two years have been so critical for the communities Virginia Garcia serves," Caballero said in a news release. "As a former Virginia Garcia patient, immigrant and BIPOC community member, I am honored and humbled to bring personal experiences to this role and boundless passion for our work. I am committed to being an ally and advocate for our patients, ensuring they have access to high-quality healthcare that is also culturally appropriate."

Caballero succeeds Serena Cruz, who led the foundation since 2013 before resigning earlier this year to become Multnomah County's chief operating officer.
