More than a quick stop
The old Boss Hoggs Smoke Shop is under new ownership, and customers will find a fresh look inside the new business, now called Prineville Quick Stop Smoke Shop and More.
Russell Weatherly bought the property in July 2021, which was previously owned by Bill Overall for more than 30 years. Weatherly is the first owner since Overall sold the property.
"I purchased it in July, and we didn't really shut down, but we were extremely limited. We just did a bunch of cleaning, painting, and hauling stuff out and putting new stuff in," Weatherly said of the new store.
Weatherly has since brought in new shelving and cases, and he offers a wide variety of tobacco — including vapes, cigars, cigarettes and chewing tobacco. In addition, they have fountain drinks, coffee, candy, snacks, candles and gloves. He indicated that they also have lottery games coming soon.
Since the tobacco is behind the counter, the store is not limited to customers 18 years of age and older. Weatherly pointed out that the previous owner did not allow anyone under 21 in the store, as the tobacco was on the floor where customers could access it. There is also a humidor for cigars.
"Everything is untouchable by kids, and behind the counter," Weatherly noted.
Weatherly has owned three other businesses in Prineville before buying the Smoke Shop. He owned Towne Pump and Pantry for seven years, Prineville Sinclair (previously 76) for eleven years, and he also had a partnership in the local bowling alley.
As to his incentive for buying the property, Weatherly replied, "I like a challenge. I have always liked challenges. The other (businesses) had gas, where this one doesn't, and gas is a different game."
"It's been a smoke shop for a long time," he added.
Weatherly indicated that the business has doubled its sales volume since opening.
"We try to take care of our customers."
Weatherly has two employees, both of whom have also worked for him in the past. Mike Pinkston and Brandon Terramin worked for Weatherly nine years and four years, respectively. Pinkston stated that the two employees trade off shifts, so that one person does not have to work late hours every night. Weatherly emphasized that the two employees worked the arrangement out themselves.
"All of us work good together," said Pinkston.
"He's a good guy to work for," added Terramin, referring to Weatherly.
Weatherly added that his offerings of beer (sold by the case) is competitively priced. They also offer biscuits and gravy meals and coffee in the mornings.
He said that the state takes a substantial chunk out of tobacco sales. Currently, the tax for a pack of 20 cigarettes is $3.33, and $4.1625 for a pack of 25.
