Summer time is a time when many people change routine, whether it is because the weather gets warmer and we spend more time outside in the sunshine, or because the kids are home from school. For some it is a time when work picks up or maybe for some it means it is time for summer vacation. Whatever the reason, summer seems to be a busy time and it is so easy to get out of the routine of spending time with God.
Psalms 46:10 says, "He says, 'Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'" It is important to take time to stop the busy-ness of life just for a moment and talk to God and let him talk to you. It not only helps us grow our spiritual life, but it helps us physically. Taking time to catch our breath and relax allows us to focus, it allows us to relax a bit. When we can get rid of the distractions in life just for a moment, our heart rate goes down just a little, our blood pressure levels are just a bit better, and our brain slows just enough to be able to focus on what is important.
"Be still and know that I am God" is when we take time to slow down and remember that God is God and we are not. We realize that through the busy-ness He is always there and watching out for us. He is there giving blessing after blessings in our lives. We may just be too busy with our Summer to realize it. I have heard it said, "If the devil can't make you bad, he will make you busy." Summertime is a time when this can be truer than others.
However, it is important for us to remember that there is power in prayer, there is strength in prayer. In 1 Chronicles 16:11, the Bible says, "Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always." The Lord will give us strength and endurance to face our day.
I want to encourage you, as summer draws to a close and we get ready for a change in routine again, maybe families getting ready for school to start or taking that last-minute summer vacation. Or maybe some are just getting geared up for the upcoming hunting season. Whatever is going on, let's not forget to take time and "be still and know that He is God."
P.S. Please remember to pray for the kids headed back to school in the next couple of weeks. Also, remember to pray for the teachers and administration.
