Promoting old time fiddling and old time music
Old time fiddling and old time music will once again fill the Crook County Fairgrounds next week with the return of the Country Music Gathering.
The event that is intended to promote, preserve and perpetuate these types of music will begin on Thursday, Sept. 12 and continue at the fairgrounds through Saturday, Sept. 14. The event, hosted by Oregon Old Time Fiddlers' Association District 3, is free to attend and people are encouraged to bring their instruments.
The Gathering kicks off midway through Thursday morning with open jamming that later transitions into a social timeframe and more jamming throughout the afternoon. Additional scheduled events include a gospel show, on-stage performances and shows as well as open mic sessions.
In addition, the Gathering will offer a variety of workshops scheduled throughout the three-day event. Topics include creating Google groups within different Oregon Old Time Fiddlers' Association districts as well as sessions on music, including Flat Picking Basics; Rag Time Rags, which focuses on how rag tunes are played; Music along the Oregon Trail; and Slow Jamming Basics.
One Saturday workshop, "The American Fiddle Method, Fiddle Styles of the World and Master Class," features Brian Wicklund, who is widely regarded among the top fiddle teachers and performers in the country.
Wicklund is the author the best-selling books, "The American Fiddle Method," published by Mel Bay and heads American Fiddle Method Online School, HYPERLINK "http://americanfiddlemethod.com/"americanfiddlemethod.com. He is an instructor at camps and workshops in the US, Canada, United Kingdom and Sweden, including his own Fiddle Pal camps in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Massachusetts.
In addition, Wicklund has been a member of bluegrass bands for decades including Stoney Lonesome, Judith Edelman Band, Kathy Kallick Band, and Chris Stuart Band. He currently fronts Minnesota-based progressive bluegrass band Barley Jacks.
Other attractions at the Gathering include a Fiddlers Country Store, which will be open each day of the event from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Meanwhile, District 3 officers will hold a meeting Friday afternoon at the fairgrounds office, and on Saturday afternoon, the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers' Association will hold its state membership meeting.
