The Cute Cactus Children's Boutique, which offers a variety of children's clothing and gifts, will host a grand opening this Wednesday

RAMONA MCCALLISTER - The Cute Cactus Children's Boutique offers a wide variety of new and used clothing.

For anyone who is looking for children's clothing or a gift for that new baby, a children's boutique has opened its doors on the corner of Main and Fifth streets in Prineville.

Jamie Diangson is the proud owner of The Cute Cactus Children's Boutique, with a grand opening slated for Wednesday, Jan. 22. Diangson has three years of experience owning and operating a retail store and previously owned a children's consignment store in Prineville.

"I enjoyed doing it, but when my youngest was born, she came really premature, so I thought it was time to sell," Diangson said. "I knew that eventually I would want to do another one. She's almost 4 now, and I just thought now was a good time to do it again."

The building became vacant and presented an opportunity for her new retail store.

"I knew I wanted something on Main Street or Third Street with good visibility," she said. "This one was on Main Street, and it was big enough."

Diangson believes that it is important for local customers to have a place to buy children's toys, clothes or gifts.

"I think it's definitely important. That way, people don't have to drive to Bend or Redmond if they are last-minute looking for something. I think it will be good for the community," she said.

She also offers free gift-wrapping and sells greeting card.

Diangson became familiar with children's consignment when her twins — who are now 9 years old — were newly born. Her sister-in-law introduced her to children's resale stores.

"I fell in love because it's such a great idea," she said.

She knew then that she wanted to open her own store in Prineville, and she did so when her twins were 3 years old.

The Cute Cactus sells both new and used clothing. The store also offers a wide variety of books toys, and puzzles.

"I do have new diaper bags, too, and I am also going to have baby room décor," she said.

The store will soon be carrying equipment and furniture such as strollers, cribs, high chairs and swings.

"We have a small section of new clothes and ... (the rest) is used. People can bring in their clothes and get trade for it," she said.

The Cute Cactus carries toys for a wide age range — from babies though older children — including the brand Melissa and Doug. There are also used shoes, new pacifier clips, teethers and hair accessories.

"We also have maternity clothes," Diangson added.

When customers bring in clothes, shoes and other baby items, Diangson goes through them and picks what she would like in the store. The customer gets a 50% store credit good on all the other used clothes, shoes and smaller items in the store. That way they don't have to wait for their items to sell like they would in a consignment shop.

"Please make sure everything is clean, with no stains, holes, or broken zippers," she said.

She takes clothes for newborn through size 10 or 12.

For equipment and furniture like strollers, cribs, high chairs, and swings, she will give 50% cash or 70% store credit. "We just ask that everything is in clean and in working condition, with no missing or broken parts," she said.
