For those who are struggling with addiction, Choices Recovery Services in Prineville offers alcohol and drug counseling services to help treat the whole person.

Choices Recovery Services is certified in Oregon to provide outpatient addiction services and DUII counseling and rehabilitation services. They now offer Medication Assisted Treatment for assistance in achieving recovery from various drugs of abuse, including opiates, heroin, methamphetamine, nicotine and alcohol.

They have been in the current building on 357 N.E. Court Street for approximately two years. Darla Byus, CADC II, began the business in 2010 in Prineville. The office was previously located behind Subway in Prineville. Autumn Russell, CMA (certified medical assistant), CADC I (ceritfied alcohol and drug counselor), came on board four years ago, and as they moved to the new location, they began to offer more treatment options.

Byus has a masters degree in addiction counseling and is currently seeking social work certification as well. She is also a military veteran and is CADC II.

Russell is a counselor and medical assistant, and she manages the advertising as well. She is a drug and alcohol counselor, with a bachelors' in addiction counseling.

"At first, we just did DUIIs (driving under the influence), then we started doing day treatment and all the kinds of treatments in between," indicated Russell.

They also offer skills training for their clients, including job interview training. Peer mentors are also assigned to work with the clients. They take them on outings, job interviews and appointments. They are paid employees who are in recovery themselves.

Choices Recovery offers services to adults 18 years and older. They brought on Nancy Burgess, a nurse practitioner, who comes in three to four times per week, to do medication management. They are also able to offer opiate medication management, as well as methamphetamines and alcohol addiction management. They have the ability to treat any kind of addiction. Burgess can prescribe medication for anxiety, depression and addiction.

Choices Recovery Services also contracts with Mid-Oregon Mental Health LPC Alex Klein, who comes on site twice per week currently to provide mental health services.

"She comes in and does and does mental health counseling," indicated Byus.

She explained that they have expanded really quickly, and they have incorporated telehealth sessions so clients can join the group sessions electronically.

"It's an option; we are not requiring that," she added. Clients also have to be screened for symptoms because of the current COVID-19 requirements before coming into the office.

Byus emphasized that they treat the whole person and teach life skills and coping skills to help them get a job and keep a job.

"That's one of the biggest things, is teaching them how to become a community member, and it really helps with recovery," said Byus.

She added that their DUII treatment focuses on improving the choices that put them in their circumstances.

"We really focus on the holistic or whole person, not just the alcohol and drugs," said Byus. "Obviously, that is our main focus — alcohol and drugs — because that is what we are licensed by the state to address. We like to address the whole issue of what is going on with the person while they are here. We have the medical team, and now we have mental health availability and we have recovery mentors to help re-engage into society."

Choices Recovery Services bills most insurances and also operates on a sliding fee scale for low income. They also work with BestCare as needed with their clients. BestCare, located in the same location as the former Lutheran Community Services, is the county mental health provider.

Choices Recovery Services also has a house where clients can stay temporarily when they are in need of housing. The clients complete day treatment as rent for their housing.
