Crook County drops just two matches in 60-9 rout of Mountain View

The Crook County Cowboys left no doubt who was the better team as they blasted the host Mountain View Cougars 60-9 in Thursday night Intermountain Hybrid wrestling action.

Despite the lopsided victory, Crook County head coach Jake Huffman still believes there is room for improvement from the LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Gunnar Robirts works to control Mountain View's Spencer Klein. Robirts pinned Klein late in the first round of their 195-pound match as the Cowboys dominated the dual 60-9.

“I thought we came out flat,” he said. “We took care of business, but we came out a little bit sluggish.”

Huffman might get an argument from Mountain View head coach Les Combs who told The Bulletin the Cowboys were “probably the best team that I’ve coached against in the 30 or so years I’ve been coaching.

The match opened with Crook County’s Brent Bannon picking up a fall over Mountain View’s Alan Morris-Reade in the first round of their 132-pound LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Brendan Harkey attempts to trip Mountain View's Jeff Durante. Harkey successfully took Durante down seconds later and pinned him just 1:06 into their 170-pound match.

Hayden Bates kept the momentum going for the Cowboys with a quick pin over Randon Elliot at 138 pounds.

Mountain View’s Kaleb Winebarger briefly broke Crook County’s momentum when he outpointed Ryder Shinkle 10-6 in their 145-pound match.

However, when Colbran Meeker took a tight 5-4 victory at 152 pounds, the Cowboys quickly regained momentum. Tyler Berger (160) and Brendan Harkey (170) earned first-round pins to put the Cowboys ahead 27-3. When Clark Woodward earned a forfeit at 182 pounds, the Cowboys had already locked up the dual.

“I was just ready to go out and tear some kids up,” Harkey said. “The team was doing good, but I think everyone on the team still has room for improvement.”

Gunnar Robirts' (195) and Trevor Rasmussen's (220) first-round pins followed by Jason Williams winning his 285-pound match by forfeit extended the Crook County lead to 51-3.

Mountain View earned their second win of the dual when Conner Duhn pinned Jared Wheeler in their 106-pound match to make by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Kurt Mode closed out Thursday's match with a 7-2 victory over Haden Kindrey in their 126-pound match.the score 51-9. Crook County’s Trayton Libolt took the 113-pound match by forfeit, there was a double forfeit at 120 pounds, and then Kurt Mode closed out the match for the Cowboys with a 7-2 victory over Haden Kingrey at 126 pounds. The match was over less than an hour after it began.

“We started off a little slow,” Mode said, “but we picked it up pretty good.”

The Cowboys will take both their varsity and jv squads to Dallas on Saturday where they take on some of the top teams in Oregon in the Brunner Invitational.

“There’s always room for improvement somewhere,” Huffman said. “We will look at what we did tonight and go back and fix it and be ready to go for Saturday. There’s some good teams there. We are going to just continue to compete and try to improve everyday.”
