Crook County survives a five-set thriller in the first round of consolation play to finish fourth at tournament

The Crook County Cowgirls came back from a loss in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 4A State Volleyball Championships to earn fourth place at the tournament, which was held in Forest Grove.LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Raegan Wilkins served the final eight points of the match as the Crook County Cowgirls came from behind in the fourth set to defeat Cottage Grove, claiming fourth place at the state tournament.

After falling to Sisters in straight sets in the quarterfinals, the Cowgirls were nearly eliminated Saturday morning in the opening round of consolation play as they survived a five-set thriller to advance to the fourth-place match.

After dropping the first set in consolation play to Scappoose 25-21, the Cowgirls rebounded to take the second set 26-24, then won set three 25-20, before dropping set four 25-19. Playing to 15 in the fifth and final set, the Cowgirls held on to take a 15-9 victory to advance to the fourth-place match against Cottage Grove.

Once again, the Cowgirls survived a close match, taking a 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21 victory.

The Cowgirls trailed 21-16 in the final set before coming back for the tight victory. Raegan Wilkins served the final 8 points of the match, while Liz Barker had a stuff block on the final point to seal the Cowgirl victory.

It was the 12th consecutive time that the Cowgirls have earned a trophy at the state championships.
