Crook County boys golf team shows improvement
Early in the season, the Crook County High School boys golf team has been struggling with consistency.
Although the team still has a long ways to go, they took a giant step forward on Monday at Bend Golf and Country Club as they shot their best round of the year in a sixth-place finish at the nine-team Bend Senior High Invitational.
"It was kind of funny," said Crook County head coach Zach Lampert. "I was expecting scores like that at Eagle Crest last Friday and then they did it at Bend, which is for all intents and purposes a tougher golf course than Eagle Crest."
The Cowboys finished with a team total of 386, 29 shots better than they shot at Eagle Crest.
Brodie Kuizenga and Hogan Smith led the way for the Cowboys with rounds of 91.
"Brodie was a little peeved at himself," Lampert said. "He had a chance to break 90 for the first time in a tournament and then had a bad 17th hole. And Hogan played a lot better, which was really good because he had been working hard trying to figure it out."
They were followed by Trenton Brinkley and Cayden Lowenbach, who both posted scores of 102. Rounding out counting golfers for the Cowboys was Matthew Fraser, who shot a round of 103.
The Cowboys team score could have been even better. The team was allowed to bring six golfers instead of the usual five. However, just five counted in the scoring. Competing in his first tournament of the year as an independent golfer, Tannon Joyner fired a round of 95.
"We used it as a qualifier for our next tournament, so Joyner will be in there Friday at Broken Top after that score," Lampert said.
Ridgeview's Isaac Buerger was the medalist at the tournament, firing a one-under par 71.
Summit easily won the team title, posting a round of 317. They were followed by Bend, 327, The Dalles, 351, Ridgeview, 362, and Hermiston, 373.
The Cowboys are back in action on Friday at the Summit Invitational, which will be held at Broken Top Golf Course in Bend.
