Cowgirls blank Cardinals 8-0
The Crook County Cowgirls gave outgoing tennis coach Lloyd Rodgers a nice gift for his final regular season tennis match.
Rodgers officially announced his retirement earlier in the afternoon before the Cowgirls blanked the Corbett Cardinals 8-0 in the final match prior to the Special District 2 Regional Tournament.
Olivia Cooper started things off for the Cowgirls with a hard-fought three-set victory over Zoe Chatterson at No. 1 singles, holding on to take a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win.
Brittney VanderJagt then whipped Ella Echternach, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles before Odessa Green rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. three singles.
Kaylee Carr then closed out the singles matches with a come-from-behind 6-7, 6-0, 6-45 win over Corbett's Emily Human.
In doubles play, Sarah Connolly and Kadence Kee blanked Emmy Bunnell and Bella Derfler 6-0, 6-0 before Marlen Ceja and Tansy Clark shut out Natalie Ameson and Keali Hitch.
The Cowgirls won the remaining two matches by forfeit.
The Cowgirls started the opening round of the regional tournament on Thursday in Madras, which each player or team expected to play one round.
Remaining players will move to Black Butte Ranch on Monday, with state tournament qualifiers being decided.
The tournament will then finish on Thursday, May 10, with the final four doubles teams and final four singles determining the regional champions.
Heading into the tournament, Cooper has earned the third seed, while Connolly and Kee are seeded fifth.
