Cowboy Mat Club excels at state wrestling tourney
The Cowboy Mat Club had possibly the biggest weekend in the history of the club as all 17 wrestlers who competed in the Kids Oregon State Freestyle Championships placed, and 16 of the 17 placed in the Greco-Roman competition.
The championships were held in Roseburg May 5-6.
Four Mat Club members placed first in the freestyle competition, while three mat club members earned titles in the Greco-Roman championship at the competition.
Cruz Evans, Maylee Yancey, Landon Lavey and Brayden Duke earned titles in the freestyle event, while Evans, Duke and Casen Villastrigo earned titles in the Greco Roman meet.
Chase Hemphill and Jeffrey Schuler placed second in the freestyle competition, while Villastrigo, Mason Lacey, Robert Lacey, Collier Buffington and Triston White were third.
Justin Tucker and Mitch Warren finished fourth in the event, while Chance Yancey and Preston Duke were fifth, and Duke Wentzel and Caleb Buffington finished sixth.
In the Greco-Roman competition, Lavey, Robert Lacey, Schuler and White finished second.
Chance Yancey, Mason Lacey, Caleb Buffington and Collier Buffington all placed third, while Tucker, Preston Duke and Warren were fourth.
Rounding out the places for the Mat Club were Hemphill and Wentzel, who both placed fifth.
Of special note, along with the two victories in May, Brayden Duke and Evans both earned Oregon Triple Crown status, joining Tucker Bonner, who had already achieved the triple crown in his Cadet weight class earlier in the year.
To win a triple crown, a wrestler must win both of the Roseburg championships, as well as the state championships that were held in Newberg earlier in the year.
