Crook County goes 0-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter in close loss at Estacada

LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Teagan Freeman sets to fire a shot in a game earlier this year. Freeman hit four three-point shots Saturday at Estacada, leading the Cowgirls with 12 points. Despite Freeman's effort, the Cowgirls still lost 41-37.The Crook County Cowgirls did everything they needed to do to earn a win, except for make free throws down the stretch.

Crook County held a one-point lead with a minute left in Saturday night's game at Estacada, but they were unable to hang on as they went 0-8 from the free-throw line in the final quarter of a 41-37 loss to the Rangers.

"We are doing some things well," Crook County head coach Heidi Lea said. "It was just free throws, and those are gimme points. Those are things that we work on in practice, and we need to hit them."

The two teams were tied 6-6 at the end of one quarter. However, Estacada had a big run in the second period, pulling out to a 24-17 halftime lead.

The Cowgirls went into a full-court press in the second half, and the strategy worked as they forced several turnovers, leading to easy baskets. The Cowgirls clawed their way back into the game, finally taking the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The Cowgirls still led 37-36 late in the game. However, Crook County missed eight free throws down the stretch.

Estacada wasn't much better. The Rangers did not hit a field goal the entire fourth quarter, but they managed to make seven free throws in the period despite going just 9-26 from the line in the game.

"We missed our free throws, and then we fouled them, and they were in the double bonus," Lea said. "They would make one and miss one and then we would go down and miss and get fouled and miss our free throws again, so it was a hard loss."

Teagan Freeman led the Cowgirls with 12 points on four three-pointers, while Liz Barker and Mckinzee Mode finished with six, and Josie Kasberger and Gracie Brooks each added four.

Barker also had 13 rebounds, while Mode finished with 10.

Rylie Gipple led the Rangers with 13 points, while Amber Liber added nine, and Isabelle Hagel finished with seven points and 12 rebounds.

With the loss, the Cowgirls fell to 1-10 on the year, while Estacada improved to 2-9.

The Cowgirls host Cottage Grove tonight in a 7 p.m. game, then open the league season on Friday when they go on the road to take on The Dalles, 6-5, in a 6:30 p.m. game.
