Crook County posts a score of 480 in their season oening tournament despite missing No. 1 player

Crook County High School girls golfWeather caused the cancellation of the first two tournaments that the Crook County High School girls golf team was scheduled to play in.

As a result, Friday's tournament at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond was the team's first action of the year.

Meanwhile, the remaining teams in the 11-team field, had all played at least one tournament.

Adding to the woes for Crook County, their No. 1 player was unable to compete in the tournament.

The rust showed as Crook County finished in 10th place. However, despite the low placing, Crook County head coach Sarah Shinkle was pleased with how her team performed.

"Our team score doesn't really show what we did," Shinkle said. "I'm proud of how they finished."

The Cowgirls were led by Sammi Todd, who posted the best round of her career, posting a score of 93, to place 16th.

Rounding out the scoring for the Cowgirls was Kaiya Eller, 109, Emma Stafanek, 131, and Bethany Kelso, 147.

Jaylyn Smith, who is expected to be the team's top golfer this year, was sick and unable to play, and it was too late to add another player to the roster, so the team played with just four golfers.

"She got sick right before we were heading off, so she couldn't play," Shinkle said of Smith. "That didn't help our team score, but Emma and Bethany had never played 18 before, and they were excited, so even though our team score doesn't show what our team is capable of, I'm happy with how they played overall."

Crook County finished with a team score of 480, something that should drop by at least 30 strokes once Smith is playing.

Valley Catholic won the team title at the event, posting a score of 348, while Woodburn was second, 369, and Pendleton third, 382.

The defending state champion Summit Storm placed fourth with a score of 401, while Redmond rounded out the top five with a round of 409.

Baylee Hammerickson of St. Mary's earned medalist honors with a three-under par round of 69.

Summit's Olivia Loberg was second with a round of 73, while Challin Kim of Valley Catholic was third with a score of 77.
