Shannon wins state saddle bronc championship
Several Crook County athletes entered this past weekend's Oregon High School State Finals Rodeo with an opportunity to win a state title.
"As a whole I think the entire Tri-County Rodeo Club did really well," said Jaxson Rhoden, who competed in steer wrestling and team roping at the three-day event.
However, when the dust finally settled Saturday afternoon, just one local athlete was able to come away with a championship.
Crook County High School senior Matt Shannon, who has led the saddle bronc riding for most of the season, was the only cowboy to make a qualified ride during all three go rounds as he extended his lead in the event to easily take the championship in the event.
Shannon finished the year with 169 points, while Jacob Dunn was second with 131 points. Prineville's Deaglan Lundquist and two other cowboys shared third, fourth and fifth place with 37 points each.
Shannon won the opening round Thursday afternoon with a score of 65. Dunn was the only other rider to make a ride, scoring just 59 points in the round. Then Friday evening, Shannon scored 62 points, while no one else was able to complete an eight-second ride. Saturday, Shannon left no doubt who was champion as he posted a score of 69, while once again, no one else was able to make a qualified ride.
Both Shannon and Lundquist qualify for the national finals, which will be held July 14-20 in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
Crook County freshman Gavin McLean had already won a state championship in boys cutting with the competition held weeks before the state finals.
McLean finished with 67 points in the event. Sam McCracken was second with 65, while Culver's Coy Aldrich finished in third with 50.5 points.
Joining McLean, Shannon and Lundquist at the national finals will be a pair of Crook County cowgirls.
Kennedy Buckner qualified for nationals in both pole bending and goat tying, while Gracie Garthwaite punched her ticket to nationals in barrel racing.
Garthwaite entered the finals in sixth place but moved up to fourth place in the standings with solid performances in all three rounds.
Garthwaite place second in Thursday morning's slack with a time of 17.856, was sixth in Friday's second go round with a time of 18.036, then finished third in Saturday's short go round with a time of 17.930.
After entering the state finals with just 49 points, Garthwaite amassed 72 points during the finals to finish the year with 111 points.
Michelle Williams, who led heading into the state finals, held on to her lead, finishing with 148 points.
Buckner entered the finals in second place in the event but struggled with consistency, as she fell to eighth place in the final standings.
Buckner was also in position to win state titles in pole bending and goat tying. However, once again, consistency was an issue as the Powell Butte junior fell from first to fourth place in pole bending and was only able to move up from fourth to third place in goat tying.
Buckner had the two fastest times of the rodeo in goat tying as she won both the second and short go rounds with times of 6.97 and 6.96 respectively. The two runs were the only two runs faster than seven seconds the entire rodeo. However, although she had another fast run in Thursday's opening round, Buckner's goat did not stay tied, leaving her with no score for the round.
That turned out to be critical as Buckner scored 73.5 points during the three-day rodeo despite not figuring in the average. Meanwhile, eventual state champion Aimee Davis had solid runs all three rounds as she won the average, scoring 88 points during the finals. Davis finished the year with 166 points, while Jacee Currin was second with 134 and Buckner third with 123.5.
Powell Butte's Paige Pentzer also competed in goat tying but did not place in any of the go rounds.
Consistency was also a problem in pole bending for Buckner, who entered the finals tied for first.
After winning the first go round with a time of 20.679, Buckner also had a fast round going in round two where she stopped the clock in 20.479. However, she knocked down two poles, earning a 10 second penalty as she finished with an official time of 20.479 to finish out of the scoring.
Then in Saturday's short go round, Buckner would have had the second fastest time, but once again she knocked down a pole as she finished seventh overall with a time of 26.159.
Because of Friday's second round, Buckner finished out of contention in the average. She finished the season with 120 points, while Cate Hepper, who was tied with Buckner entering the finals, won the event with 147 points. Jacee Currin and Hailie Millard tied for second with 134 points, while Buckner fell all the way to fourth.
Buckner also competed at state in breakaway roping and team roping. She and partner Bubba Luttrell failed to place in any of the three rounds of team roping, but she was able to place in both the second and third go rounds of breakaway roping as she finished eighth overall. Logan Nedrow won the event championship with 123 points, while Buckner finished with 68.
Luttrell also competed in tie down roping but failed to place in any of the three go rounds.
The final two Crook County athletes to compete in the state finals were Delaney Smith and Jaxson Rhoden.
Rhoden entered the finals in seventh place but had an outside chance to qualify for nationals.
That chance went away during Thursday's slack performance as Rhoden failed to earn a time.
"That steer wasn't caught all weekend," Rhoden said. "If I would have had that one down in under 10 or 11, I would have been sitting good for nationals."
Still, the Crook County senior bounced back to place fifth on Friday with a time of 13.27 and second on Saturday with a time of 6.89.
"That last run was golden," Rhoden said. "That was probably the best run I've had all year. I was really pleased with how the horse ran. He worked very well all weekend."
Despite not earning a time on Thursday, that still moved Rhoden up to sixth place in the final standings with 93 points.
Chase Joyce was the event winner with 143 points.
Rhoden and roping partner Michelle Williams also placed seventh in the first go round of team roping with a time of 24.64. The duo also caught their steer in the second go round Thursday evening, but did not have a quick enough time to place. Like Buckner and Luttrell, they failed to advance to Saturday's short go round in the event.
Smith entered the finals in 13th place in pole bending and needed two solid runs in order to reach the short go round.
During Thursday's slack, Smith finished ninth with a time of 21.739, keeping her in the hunt for a top 10 spot.
However, in Thursday's second go round, Smith knocked over a pole, finishing out of the money with a time of 26.955.
Garthwaite also competed in pole bending but did not place in any of the go rounds.
In addition to Crook County athletes, several other Tri-County Rodeo Club members also competed in the state finals.
Aldrich won the reined cow horse competition, which was held earlier in the year. Aldrich and roping partner Brayden Schmidt also won the team roping title. The duo finished second on Thursday with a time of 7.64 and first on Friday with a time of 6.04.
Although the duo did not earn a time on Saturday, they still amassed enough points to easily win the state championship.
Aldrich also competed in tie-down roping, finishing eighth in the first go round, third in the second go and second in the short go round as he moved up to fourth in the final standings.
Aldrich also competed in steer wrestling, finishing fourth in the second go round, but he did not finish in the top 10 in the final standings.
Aldrich, who was first in the all-around championship heading into this past weekend's final, dropped to second in the final standings, while Chase Joyce went on to win the all-around championship.
Five other Tri-County Rodeo Club cowboys also competed in the finals.
Preston Young of Redmond finished second overall in steer wrestling to earn a trip to nationals.
Young and his brother, Dillon, also qualified for nationals in team roping, finishing in third place as a team.
Dillon was also ninth in steer wrestling and fifth in tie-down roping, while Preston was eighth in tie-down roping.
Sterling Cook of Bend had an outstanding finals, placing in all three go rounds of bareback riding. Cook was second in the opening round with a score of 62, finished second again on Friday with a score of 64, then won Saturday's short go round with a score of 70.
Local athletes also did well in Friday's shooting competition, with Dillon Young qualifying for nationals in trap shooting, while Lundquist, Luttrell and Colton Kluser qualified in rifle shooting.
The three solid performances moved Cook up to third in the final standings earning a trip to the national finals.
Cord Gomes of Antelope and Kluser of Redmond also competed in the finals.
Kluser and roping partner Aimee Davis won the short go round of team roping and finished 10th in the final standings, while Gomes finished third in the second go round of steer wrestling with a time of 11.67.
Four additional Tri-County Rodeo Club cowgirls also competed in the finals. They were Dally Miotke of Terrebonne, Brooke Blevins of Redmond, Mecarte Cook of Culver and Jaiden Unruh of Madras.
Unruh, who competed in barrels, failed to place in any of the go rounds, while Cook placed seventh in the second go round of goat tying.
Miotke finished 10th in the first go round of goat tying, while Blevins was ninth in the first go round, 10th in the second go round, and sixth in the short go round in the same event. In addition to the national finals, contestants were also competing for an opportunity to participate in the Silver State International Rodeo, which will be held June 29 through July 6 in Winnemucca, Nevada.
Contestants finishing in fifth through 15th place at this weekend's state finals qualified for the Nevada event.
