While the COVID-19 pandemic crisis has canceled events from spring onward, the summer run was able to be held with social distancing provisions.

A total of 48 runners took part — many wearing festive and patriotic Fourth of July running gear — in the event that began at Fourth and Fairview and ended up at the Ochoco Creek footbridge.

James Blanchard was the overall winner, clocking a 19:33.7. Chuck Coats finished second in 20:00.92.

Beth Cokenow was the top female finisher, coming across in 24:52.6.

The multi-event Splash 'N Dash, the original and annual Prineville Fourth of July athletic event, was not held in its usual form this year. Instead, the Dash — which features a swimming leg at the Prineville Pool, a bike ride, a canoe padle on the Crooked River and a finishing running leg — will be held vrtually this year.

The Marsh Run also has a virtual element. For details on the virtual events, go to Splashdash.org.

Ernie Brooks, the coach of the Crook County High School track program, is the lead organizer for the Marsh and Splash 'N Dash events. The events are usually fundraisers for the program, but this year, with participating and sponsorships down due to the pandemic, he hopes to break even.
