Coaches and athletes are happy to be back on the track after missing '20 spring

LON AUSTIN - Eliot Moore clears a hurdle during the 100-meter high hurders. Moore won both that race and the high jump competition in the meet with Culver at Crook County Oct. 1.

Thursday night Crook County High School hosted the Culver Bulldogs in a dual track meet at Ward Rhoden Stadium in Prineville.

The Cowboys were originally scheduled to run at Redmond on Thursday, but the Panthers decided not to host a meet at this time, so Crook County elected to host a meet.

With far more firepower than the class 2A Bulldogs, both the Cowboys and Cowgirls easily won the meet.

The Cowboys outscored the Bulldogs 353.5 to 54.5, while the Cowgirls outscored Culver 370 to 19.

"It's been great to get back and be with the kids," said Crook County head coach Ernie Brooks about finally being able to compete after missing the 2020 spring season. "We didn't think we were going to have a huge group come out with everything, but they surprised us and we are around 75-70 even though we are still missing 25 kids from last year that should be out. We have to jump through the hoops, cross our T's and dot the I's and make sure we are running it safely, but it's been a great opportunity for our kids to train and they are putting in the work."

Culver head coach Nathan Barber is also happy that his kids are back on the track.

"I was happy for the sophomores. They were not able to get any personal records last year as freshmen so this track meet was their first high school track meet. Hopefully they can take their times and distances and use them as a goal for this spring if we are able to have a season. All of our athletes did very well after the long layoff they have had."

With just two teams at the meet the two teams did not contest every running event. The two schools did not run either relay race, the 400 meters or the 1,500 meters.

Of the remaining events Crook County won all but one. The Cowboys swept all 13 events contested in the meet, while the Cowgirls won 12 of 13.

Culver's Anyla Rico was their lone victory taking first in the javelin with a throw of 1-2-06 fourth in the discus with a toss of 76-04 and fifth in the shot put with a heave of 25-06. Rico was the lone Culver girl to compete in the meet.

For the Cowgirls Maggie Ramoss, Eliot Moore and Dallas Hutchins were all multiple event winners. Ramoss won the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.42, and also took first in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 53.73. Moore took first in the 100 high hurdles with a time of 19.72 and also won the high jump with a leap of 4-06. Hutchins dominated the remaining jumping events, taking first in the long jump with a leap of 15-05 in the long jump and 32-03.5 in the triple jump.

Other Cowgirl winners include Aubrey Love, 13.43 in the 100 meters, McCall Woodward, 2:55.67 in the 800, Savannah Jessee, 12:32.97 in the 3,000, Josie Kasberger, 30-03 in the shot put, Grace Brooks, 93-08 in the discus and Kacie Wickershiem, 7-06 in the pole vault.

For the Cowboys Alex Smith and Alec Carne each won three events while Ayden Hall won two. Smith took first in the 200, 24.54, 110 high hurdles, 18.74, and pole vault, 8-06. Carne's victories came in the 800, 2:02.21, 300 intermediate hurdles, 43.29, and long jump, 29-01, while Hall won the discus, 103-03, and shot put, 36-11.

Other Crook County winners include Triston Fischer, 11.68 in the 100, Alex Vail, 10:01.10 in the 3,000, Azariah Becker, 109-01 in the javelin, Josh Knight, 5-08 in the high jump, and Kyree Willis, 36-11.25 in the triple jump.

"At the beginning of the season I talked to them and said anyone can work hard, it's just the work factor, but to compete, that takes your heart," Brooks said. "And, we competed well today. From the first week to now we knew that there were going to be a lot of personal records because of being out of training and now we don't have smoke so we got in a solid week of training and that really makes a difference."

Although Culver athletes did not win any boys events according to Barber they still had some great performances.

"For the short amount of practice that we had they they have had they worked very hard," he said. "Rico was awesome. She really performed weill in the javelin as weel as in the shot put and discus and Peter Miranda, Max Jaimes, Keegan Lambries all did very well in all of their throwing events, while Ethan Russo, Trent Reese, Aaron Scott and Andreas Mendez did well in their running events."

Russo finished eight in the 100 with a time of 13.11, was ninth in 13.49, while Scott was 11th with a time of 13.73.

Reese finished seventh in the 200 in 29.23, while Scott was eight in 30.55. Scott came back to finish fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:48.04, while Mendez was sixth in 2:56.52. Mendez also finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 79-00. Jaimes was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 29-07, while Lambries was fifth with a throw of 29-06.

The Bulldogs finish their season with a meet on Tuesday at Sisters.

Meanwhile the Cowboys are the home team again when they host Ridgeview on Wednesday with field events starting at 5 p.m. and running events to follow at 6:15 p.m.

"We were supposed to go to Redmond, but they decided not to host so we said we will host and we had almost all of our help here even on short notice," Brooks said. "Prineville is so awesome. We can say hey, we have this and we need help and people will say I can do it, even at the last minute. 'I'm here to do whatever you need, what can we do for the kids.' It's just that attitude that is awesome, so our track meet help and volunteers have just been great."
