Crook County Cowboys' 7-on-7 football action starts the second fall prep season

CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Cainen Smith boots the ball during the Cowboys' 2019 season last fall. The boys and girls soccer programs starts a short season this week.

Crook County High School kicks off OSAA season 1B on Monday when the football teams plays 7-on-7 against Ridgeview, Mountain View and Culver at Ridgeview.

In 7-on-7 football, the offensive team consists of a center and all backs and receivers, while the defensive team is made up of linebackers and defensive backs. The game is typically played during the summer months allowing skill position players to work on timing without having to worry about contact. The game is fast paced and can be high scoring.

The frosh/soph games are set to begin at 5 p.m. with varsity teams playing at 6 p.m.

Then, on Wednesday, the football team is back in action at Sisters while the boys and girls soccer teams open their seasons against Sisters, with the boys hosting the Outlaws while the girls travel to Sisters.

The fall season would normally have volleyball games and cross country races as well. However, a cross country schedule has not yet been released, while school-sponsored volleyball matches are not being allowed due to COVID.

Crook County is still hoping to get some games playing under the Rimrock Volleyball Club banner, however, no games have yet been scheduled.

The competitive season runs for the next three weeks, with teams playing games against Redmond, Ridgeview, Sisters, and Madras over the course of the next three weeks. Culver, Mountain View, Summit and La Pine are also participating in the 7-on7 football games. The fall season officially ends on Friday, Nov. 20 with the Winter season set to begin on Monday, Nov. 23. As of today, neither basketball games or wrestling would be allowed, but teams are expected to be allowed to at least practice.

The OSAA season 1 officially ends for all sports on Friday, Dec. 25 with the OSAA winter season scheduled to start on Monday, Dec. 28, assuming that COVID rules allow for games.

With the COVID virus currently spiking in several states, including Oregon, it is unclear if either the winter OSAA season 1 or the official winter season will actually happen. Fans are just going to have to wait and see what develops.
