Cowgirls split matches
The Crook County High School girls tennis team split a pair of matches this past week.
The Cowgirls hosted Pendleton on Monday, falling 6-2 to the Buckaroos. Wednesday, the Cowgirls were on the road against Hood River Valley and came away with a 5-3 victory over the Eagles.
Monday, the two Cowgirl winners were Kaylee Carr and Maria Knight. Carr won the number one singles match in a tiebreaker, winning the first set 6-4 over Pendleton's Olivia Corbett. However, Corbett came back to win the second set 6-2, setting up a tiebreaker, which Carr won 12-9.
Meanwhile, in the number three singles match, Knight took a straight set 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pendleton's Lucy Oyama.
Pendleton swept the remaining matches. Sarah House defeated Alena McCabe at number two singles 6-4, 6-3, then Melinda Cramp took a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ivy Carter in number four singles.
In doubles action, Sylvie Heriza and Clare Durant rolled past Sammy Thornton and Cecily Cooper 6-2, 6-1, Katie Kelm and Kyra Jackson took a 6-3, 6-3 win over Harlee Botham, and Malorie Thompson, Emmah Barnes, Kalan Spencer and Nora Yoshioka whipped Malorie Thompson and Macy Wiederholt, and Tatum Paullus and Milee Smith edged Yadhira Ceja and Ana Cabellero 6-3, 7-5.
Hood River was another story as the Cowgirls took control of the match early.
Once again, Carr took the win in number one singles in a close match, getting past Cassandra Moreno 6-6 (11-9), 6-0. Other Cowgirls to win singles matches were Alena McCabe and Meredith Cooper. McCabe edged Briana Santillan 7-5, 6-4 in number three singles action while Cooper easily defeated Vivian Olson 6-1, 6-2. Hood River Valley won the remaining singles match as Erica Matthisen edged Maria Knight 6-3, 0-6, 10-7 in number two singles play.
Hood River Valley won the number one and two doubles matches as Tally Godicin and Mira Olson rolled past Sammy Thornton and Cecily Cooper 6-3, 6-0 while Brissa Bojas and Gisell Carabontes won the tiebreaker to edge Emmah Barnes and Harlee Botham 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
However, Crook County won the number three and four doubles matches to earn the overall victory.
First, Yadhira Ceja and Haven Housley edged Amy Fowler and Indigo Caudill 6-6 (5-7), 7-5, 10-6 in number three doubles, then Malorie Thompson and Macy Wiederholt clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Giselle Quintana and Arely Chamonica in number four doubles.
The Cowboys were also scheduled to play Pendleton and Hood River Valley this past week, but no results were available for the matches as of print time.
The Cowgirls hosted The Dalles on Monday, then are on the road on Wednesday when they travel to Redmond to take on the Ridgeview Ravens in a 3 p.m. match, while the Cowboys were at The Dalles on Wednesday and host Ridgeview Wednesday, also at 3 p.m.
