Kasberger and Brooks lead a strong field effort; Cowboys nip Hood River to take third place

LON AUSTIN - Jose Kasberger, shown in a meet earlier in the season, won the javelin and discus and took second in the shot put to lead an excellent throwing performance by the Cowgirls, leading them to the IMC district title.

The Crook County Cowgirls are Intermountain Conference District track and field champions.

Despit two of their top sprinterse not running due to injuries, at the disdtrict meet in Pendleton Friday and Saturday, the Cowgirls finished with 151 points, while the runnerup Hood River Valley Eagles finished with 127 points. Rounding out the girls team scoring were Pendleton, 125, Redmond, 94, The Dalles, 83, and Ridgeview, 63.

The Cowboys didn't fare as well, taking third in the six-team field. Pendleton came away with the district championship, with 141 points. Ridgeview took second, 118.5, while Crook County finished with 105 points. Rounding out the boys team scoring were Hood River Valley, 104.5, Redmond, 93, and The Dalles, 85.

Crook County also won both the boys and girls JV meets.

"It was great to see them rise up," Crook County head coach Ernie Brooks said. "We had no season last year and you know the story. Our girls lost district by a point two years ago, and by two the year before that. So to finally win it was amazing to see."

Brooks added that as far as he knows the Cowgirls have not finished first in a district meet in at least 30 years.

"After Fuentes and Love got hurt we challenged our girls," Brooks said. "Our big message this week was to move up. Move up in times and distance. Move up in places. Move up as teammates. And that's exactly what they did."

The Cowgirls did much of their damage in the field events, sweeping the first three places in both the shot put, taking three of the first four places in the discus, and winning the long and triple jumps.

Jose Kasberger won the discus with a throw of 114-10, and the javelin, 104-09, and finished second in the shot put with a heave of 29-11.75.

Grace Brooks took first in the shot put, 30-11, and second in the discus with a throw of 112-02.5. Brooks was also sixth in the javelin with a toss of 78-01. The Cowgirls third thrower, Lauren Papke finished third in the shot put with a heave of 27-03, fourth in the discus with a toss of 86-03.5, and fifth in the javelin with a toss of 84-07.

Dallas Hutchins led a group of three Cowgirls to place in the triple jump, taking first by nearly two feet with a leap of 35-02. Sophia Langley placed fifth in the event with a leap of 29-07.5, while Elise Rice was sixth with a jump of 29-02.75.

Also in the field events, Madelynn Fuentes placed second in the long jump with a leap of 16-05.5, but, that second came at a price as Fuentes was injured and was unable to compete in her remaining events. Hutchins was seventh with a jump of 15-05.25. Also in the field events, Eliot Moore took third in the high jump with a jump of 4-04, while Aubrey Love finished sixth in the pole vault with a clearance of 8-00, but like Fuentes, she was injured during the meet and was unable to compete in the sprints.

The Cowgirls also had success in the distance races as Lindsey Mode took second in the 3,000 with a time of 12:15.17 and Kelcie Ames finished fifth in both the 1,500 and 3,000 with times of 5:54.60 and 13:11.22, respectively. McCall Woodward, who is still coming back from a serious leg injury also placed in the distance races, taking seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:52.

Other Cowgirl placers on the track included Maggie Ramoss, third in the 400 with a time of 1:03.32, and sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.51, McKenzie Jonas, seventh in the 200 with a time of 29.00, Ivakai Heiges, sixth in the 100 hurdles in 18.20, and Rice, seventh in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.88.

The Cowgirl 4x100 relay team of Love, Fuentes, Hutchins and Ramoss finished fifth with a time of 54.67, while the 4x400 relay squad of Hutchins, Jonas, Tienna Quinn, and Ramoss were also fifth with a time of 4:29.12.

The Cowboys lone win came in the 4x400 relay as Triston Fischer, Alex Smith, Zach Guthrie and Alec Carne finished nearly four seconds ahead of the field with a time of 3:31.41. The Cowboy 4x100 relay team of Eddie Freauff, Westley Ossenkop, Smith and Fischer also had an outstanding performance, placing second with a time of 45.52.

Carne had a busy day, placing second in both the 800 and 300 hurdles with times of 2:02.23 and 43.07, respectively. Carne also placed in the 1,500, taking fifth with a time of 4:12.19.

"That kid is amazing," Brooks said. "He sees the team aspect and cares for his team."

Brooks added that fellow senior Zach Guthrie, who along with Carne were among a group of team leaders who all spoke to the team prior to the meet."

Freshman Jacob Mckinnon also placed in the 800, finishing seventh with a time of 2:14.15. In one of the most exciting races of the meet, Crook County's Alex Vail placed fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 9:32.07. Despite placing fifth, Vail was just five seconds out of first, and less than a second out of second in the race.

In addition to running on both relay teams, Smith took third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.26 and fourth in the 110 hurdles in 18.92 seconds. Kyree Willis also placed in the 300 hurdles, taking fifth with a time of 46.41.

Guthrie also had a solid day, taking second in the 100 in a time of 11.58, third in the 200, 23.53, and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19-09. Along with running on both relay teams, Fischer was also third in the 400 with a time of 53.59.

Ayden Hall placed in both the shot put and discus, taking fifth in the shot, 38-07 and third in the discus with a throw of 121-08.

In addition to placing in the 300 hurdles, Willis finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 37-03.5, while Azariah Becker was sixth in the javelin with a toss of 120-05.75.

Brooks noted that Carne was named male track athlete of the meet, while Kasberger just missed out on the female field event athlete of the meet, and the Crook County High School staff were named coaching staff of the year.

Crook County is scheduled to compete at Summit on Wednesday.

While it is not being called a state championship, Crook County's top performers will travel to Wilsonville on Friday, for the 5A Invitational. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with running events set to kick off at 3 p.m.

Kasberger, Brooks, Ramoss, Guthrie, Fischer, Carne, Hutchins, and Hall are all scheduled to compete in Willsonville, as well as Fuentes if she is healthy.
