Elise Rice finishes 4th in the girls heat, while Gavin Humphreys leads Cowboy team

The Crook County High School boys and girls cross country teams both finished in second place at the Escape the Rock cross country race, which was held at Fort Rock State Park, south of La Pine.

Bend Senior High won both races, taking the boys race with a nearly perfect score of 16, while they also took an easy win in the girls race, finishing with 18 points.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys edged Caldera 51 to 53 to take second in the boys meet, while Crook County finished with 37 points in the girls race to earn their second-place finish.

Teams from Lakeview, Cascade Academy of Central Oregon, North Lake and La Pine also competed in the meet, but none of those teams were able to field complete squads.

La Pine's Wyatt Montgomery won the boys race with a time of 18:26.7. Benjamin Keon of Bend was second with a time of 18:53.9, while teammate Blake Reid finished third with a time of 18:53.95.6. Gavin Humphreys was the first Crook County finisher, taking 10th place overall with a time of 20:31.7. He was followed by Kernan Teasdale, 13th with a time of 21:07.3, Tanner Joyce, 15th in 21:, Duke Wentzel, 16th in 21:34.3, Daniel Olson, 23rd with a time of 22:07.9, and Aidan Bonner, 24:31.4.

The girls race was won by Jessy Lopez of Bend with a time of 23:01.1. She was followed across the finish line by Elizabeth Goeres of Lakeview with a time of 23:24.8. Bend's Maya Pagano placed third with a time of 23:365.5, while Crook County's Elise Rice finished fourth in a time of 23:41.6.

Following Rice to the finish line for Crook County were McKall Woodward, ninth in a time of 24:31.4. Rounding out the Crook County runners were Patagonia Carne, 10th with a time of 24:33.9, Anne Carne, 13th in a time of 25:19.6, Kattalin Urresti, 14th in 27:19.7, and Lindsey Mode, 18th in a time of 25:49.5.

Crook County competes again on Thursday when they travel to Black Butte Ranch for a race on Big Meadow Golf Course.

The meet will be the final preparation for the Cowboys prior to the district meet, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Birch Creek Golf Course in Pendleton.
